Summary/Abstract: Researchers agree that the sources of the financial crisis can be found in thefinancial sector. The panacea for the short comings of the banking sector was to be the new Basel III regulation, which had been preceded by Basel I, Basel II and Basel 2.5 regulations. Representatives of the banking sector and scientists expressed that the new regulations lead to the so-called over-regulation of the banking sector. The idea of full harmonization of legal provisions and supervisory measures, the need to maintain the principle of comparability and the desire to guarantee equal competitive conditions, regardless of the legal status of entities covered by the law, have forced even small local institutions such as cooperative banks to adapt to the new regulations. The aim of the study was to present the genesis, characteristics and compare the mechanisms functioning in institutional protection systems in the cooperative banking sector.
