Summary/Abstract: The present paper proposes an epistemoloogical construct to study dictionaries in their socio-historical context. The construct is rooted in the communicative model of lexicography. It is being exemplified on the analysis of societal factors, dictionary components, and lexicographic strategies in South Slavic historical lexicography. Additionally, the construct is applied to the case study of the 1818 Serbian Dictionary by Vuk Stefanović Karadžić, which contained strong ideological background.
