Summary/Abstract: The family business is a fundamental part of the productive structures both industrialized and developing economies have a close relationship between the family business and society in which they operate. In Mexico, rural communities seek to organize their activities through various economic entities; one of them is the cooperative society. This article presents the results of a study on the fishing cooperative Unión de Pescadores del Puerto de Altata (Union of Fishermen of Altata Bay), which operates in the rural community called Altata in Sinaloa, Mexico, and operated by its members, who live in that community. The main objective of the research was to analyze the characteristics of the organization and of the aspects that make up the cooperative as a family business. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with members of the cooperative, complemented by the implementation of a survey that helped to know the socioeconomic situation of members of the organization. The results indicate that the cooperative operates in a rural community through the exploitation of sea species; its members are young fishermen with basic studies whom have children and parents who are and were members of the cooperative, who occupied leading positions both current partner like her parents for two years without training; thus conclude that cooperative members have family ties, direct the cooperative based on his personal judgment, transferred the knowledge of fishing for generations, reflecting components that characterize a family business.
