Summary/Abstract: The meaning of philosophy, regardless of the level of our agreement on its universality, cannot be treated independently of the socio-cultural context. Every time and every society not only determine philosophical answers, but also the way of asking philosophical questions. Philosophy as professional discipline and subject of study should be treated within the given societal context, the prevailing ideology and the educational system. Examples of specific legitimation and institutionalization of philosophy are to be found, among others, in Muslim societies and in Scandinavia. The aim of this paper is to draw attention to the necessity of a more intensive study of inter-philosophical communications as it happened throughout history in order to achieve a dipper understanding of the history of world philosophy as well as the specificities of the particular philosophical traditions.
