Summary/Abstract: This article explores the relationship between the smart city model and cross-border cooperation in an attempt to find new ground to tackle digital challenges that exist within the European Union. First, the article offers theoretical and institutional views on smart cities in order to decipher the main markers that can be explored within CBC programs. Then, the practical part regards tracing the markers of smart cities in the priorities of Romanian-Hungarian and Romanian-Bulgarian cross-border cooperation programs.
