The role of classical music in the drama of the feature film (on the examples of modern Western European and American cinema)

Summary/Abstract: Purpose of the article. The article attempts to trace the tendencies of using classical music in the context of the film, as well as to analyze the degree of unity between the musical and the visual components. Classical music in feature films is one of the artistic techniques, which is frequently used by European and American film directors. Many classical works are rooted in the minds of several generations and, consequently, spectators, which allows directors to solve some creative tasks: deepening the main character, reflecting the psychological atmosphere, associating the historical era. Methodology. The comparative method has allowed observing defined functions of classical works in the feature films "The Silence of the Lambs," "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and "Immortal Beloved." The analysis of a significant number of modern feature films displays that the use of classical music is the particular artistic device, rather than any regular phenomenon. Scientific novelty of the research lies in the disclosure question of classical music in the feature film and its practical use as one of the artistic techniques by directors of modern European and American films. Conclusions. Classical music in modern cinema can perform various expressive functions from the main character additions to the global events association. Considering an in-depth knowledge of the musical legacy, the composer has an opportunity to influence the choice of a classical music fragment by the director, which will enrich the film in an emotional and historical context.
