Summary/Abstract: From spring to autumn 1915 Russia was forced to oppose the offensive of the main forces of Germany and Austria‐Hungary. During the “Great retreat” Poland, Lithuania, part of Belarus and Ukraine was left. Huge human and material losses led to a sharp decrease in the combat capability of the Russian army, which gave Austria‐Hungary the opportunity to intensify its actions on the Balkan front against Serbia, and Germany – to launch an offensive on Verdun to defeat France. Russian Supreme Commandment had made considerable efforts to restore the army's capacity to launch the offensive. The main blow was struck in the area of lakes Naroch and Vishnev. The offensive resulted in significant losses, and its only success was to assist the allies. The Germans temporarily suspended the attack on Verdun.
