Summary/Abstract: As far as illnesses which can be contracted by human beings are concerned one finds many designations, official or popular ones. A formal as well as semantic analysis of a certain number of these names was carried out for the purpose of the present paper using a corpus established by written sources such as dictionaries and literary texts. The result of this analysis consists of synonymous series of terms designating certain illnesses. This synonymy is not fortuitous. It shows a real linguistic need of calling a disease in a way particular to the speaker and the communication situation.
