Summary/Abstract: The period 1940-1944 was an extremely difficult one for European Jewry, subject to a comprehensive program of persecution and extermination, with the decisive contribution of Nazi Germany and its allies. The Antonescu Regime differed from that of his predecessors and from its contemporary European counterparts in some significant respects, and, while enjoying the overwhelming support of the Romanian nation for the military activities against the Soviet Union, it was still a military dictatorship. The article analyses some aspects of the Jewish situation in Romania during this period, and its relations with the Romanian state in a complex context, mainly based on archival sources.
