Content and scope of the concept of autonomy: definition challenges

Summary/Abstract: Despite a deep interest in phenomenon of territorial autonomy construction, the concept itself belongs to the catalogue of contentious and controversial notions. There is no consensus on single and firm definition of territorial autonomy. The article reviews historical and contemporary definitions of that term. Consequently, the constitutive features of autonomy are outlined, especially in its territorial approach. The work also proposes several different approaches to the typology of autonomy, highlighting the differences between the so-called classic and the contemporary nature of this solution.
