Summary/Abstract: The main focus of this study is the analysis of art as an institution within a concrete socio-historical context: Eastern Europe and especially Yugoslavia in the aftermath of the breakup of socialism. Contemporary art is treated as a form of genre and ‘Eastern European’ art as a typical construct of the global art institution. The mechanisms under which this institution functions are analyzed, as well as the relationship between art and wider social and historical processes at the transition from the 20th to the 21st century.
