Summary/Abstract: Ethical problems are an integral part of social researchers’ work within both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Some of them are common to all research methods, while others depend on a particular research method, group, or question. This article discusses ethical problems appearing in biographically-oriented research. Based on the example of her own research on gender identity in elderly people, the author examines the problems that are likely to arise in the researcher’s relationship with a given researched group; she considers her own experiences and ways to cope with them. The difficulties include sampling, the problem of informed consent, the content of the autobiographical narrative, the researcher’s responsibility for the emotions evoked in the respondents, and the influence of the traits and emotions of the person conducting the research on its course. Therefore, the article serves as a contribution to a broader discussion about the difficulties and ethical problems which both male and female researchers have to face in the research field, but which they rarely disclose and discuss.
