Summary/Abstract: The Northern African countries – culturally different and, at the same time, geographically close to Europe – are a popular holiday destination among Poles. After the Arab revolution that began in Tunisia and swept through almost all the countries of the Maghreb area, Egypt and the Arabian Peninsula, there was a temporary decline in the sale of offers to these tourist destinations. However, due to the significant share of the tourist sector in the gross domestic product of the countries in this area, the governments have not ceased in their efforts to make holidaymakers feel safe in these countries. The goal of this paper is to look at terrorism as a phenomenon that occurs in the political and social landscape in holiday destinations chosen by Poles. The Maghreb countries – i.e. Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt – have been selected for two reasons. The terrorist issue in these countries is well defined, and there is vast evidence provied by the quantitative data of the Polish Chamber of Tourism that confirms that they are popular holiday destinations for Poles. Taking these qualitative-quantitative relations into account, the paper describes selected contemporary terrorist and Islamist organisations that operate in certain countries, and includes the numerous warnings issued by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and an exemplification of selected terrorist attacks.
