Summary/Abstract: The article discusses how Russian writers of the twentieth century, advocates of the ideas of pure art, relate to the popularity of the educational role of Russian literature. The reasons behind the existing trend and its influence on the development of literature are analysed. It is argued that many proponents of pure art do not consider the didactic orientation productive and identify an alternative trend in Russian literature, or give an example of the peculiarities in the development of art in other countries. It is pointed out that some adherents of "art for art's sake" demonstrate not only the rejection of didactic moralizing in literature, but also pay attention to the noble nature of the motivation for the utilitarian approach to literature.
