Summary/Abstract: This article discusses literary facts related to the attitude of Narodnik writers towards military-political conflicts in the Balkans in which Russia participated (the Serbo-Turkish War of 1876 and the Bulgarian crisis of 1886). G. I. Uspensky witnessed both events and captured his understanding of what is happening in a number of essays. The writer criticizes the ideas of Russian identity and Slavic brotherhood. Russians must show the world an example of genuine Christian love for their neighbor. The task of the Russians, according to Uspensky, is to take care of the working man. Peasants need to be given land and education. And only in this case can one count on the strength of the moral influence of the Russians in the Balkans. The constant opponent of G. Uspensky, the writer N. N. Zlatovratsky, was convinced that peasant labor was the key to peace and brotherhood of peoples. To prove this, Zlatovratsky depicts peasant solidarity between former enemies - Russians and Turks.
