Summary/Abstract: This article examines the polysemy of the term ʔîn “and, with”. The aim of this paper is to show the originality of the Gbaya yaayuwee language that does not use this preposition as both commutative and instrumental marker like in many others languages such as English and Tuki, etc. The study of this term points out that the noun phrase coordination does not function like the clausal coordination in Gbaya. On one hand, ʔîn is only used in the noun phrase coordination, occurring between two nouns, to express the addition. On the other one, it can appear after a verb and, therefore, serves as a preposition marking the commutative and oppositive values. Accordingly, this paper is useful for Ubanguian languages, typological and semantic studies.
