Summary/Abstract: For decades, Afghanistan served as a battlefield for various regimes, employing urban planning as one of the important strategies for dissemination of their respective ideologies. The political imports have not provided Afghanistan much opportunity to develop its own urban planning agenda. That is not to say Afghani architects and planners do not have the expertise - quite the opposite. On the example of Kabul, the paper scrutinises the urban planning practices from British colonial era up to today, attempting to identify negotiations between foreign influences and local practices. Since the city is now facing a major development challenge, it is more than urgent to choose the right approach for urban development.
