Summary/Abstract: The main intention of my text is to describe the specificof the somatic turn of cultural studies and, to follow ChrisBarker’s proposition, “the desire to understand the ways inwhich the body becomes the object of shaping and discipliningby social and cultural forces – i.e. how the bodyacquires meaning in contemporary culture”. The aboveproblem provokes the consideration of the mutual relationshipsbetween the culture of late modernity and thecategory of identity (especially the body in the process ofidentity construction). The goal outlined in this way aimsto present contexts and space for the manifestation of theissues of the body in contemporary culture, The aim ofthe proposed deliberations is to present the problem ofthe body from the perspective of reflexive identity (A. Giddens),constructivism perspective (Z. Melosik, A. Gromkowska,M. Bogunia-Borowska), in selected therapeuticsystems (J. Kabat-Zinn, A. Lowen, S.&C. Block) and in thefinal section I present the category of the body in the integralapproach to development (K. Wilber). Also, I shortlysummarize my analysis and I point to the dangers of thepresented approaches especially in the dominant instantculture practices.
