Summary/Abstract: Purpose of the article is to study the essence of tourism as a universal phenomenon in human history through the prism of the Psychology of Culture and Hermeneutics. The methodology of the research consists in using the methods of the Psychology of Culture, comprehensively perceiving and analyzing the phenomenon of the "second nature" itself, and Philosophical Hermeneutics for revealing the internal content of texts relating to tourism. Scientific novelty consists in proving the study of ontological aspects of the inner nature tourism as a spiritual phenomenon. Based on biblical texts and works of art, it is proved that tourism is a modern form of the narrative of travel, which can be traced throughout the centuries of human history. Conclusions. One of the most expedient methods of studying tourism as a cultural phenomenon is understanding it as a universal narrative about human travel. We see examples of this in the texts of the Old Testament, in particular in the stories about calling for the mission of Abraham and the prophet Elijah through the order to go on a journey as a metaphor for spiritual strength and restoration to a new life free from weakness and sin, as well in the imagery of the epistles of the apostle Paul, in which uses a comparison of life with running, sports competitions. The tourist follows the "personal myth of the "marathon runner," or "hoplite-herald", as someone who brings good news after the tests through and undergoes a kind of initiation (involving the consciousness and subconscious). Examples of signs and symbols in the language of tourism, actually performing the role of а simulacrum, created as stable associative structures for the modern tourist and "post-tourist" are given.
