Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyze the prerequisites for the creation and main achievements of the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts (KNUHM) Department of Folk Choreography, which was the first in Ukraine to train specialists in folk choreographic art with higher education. The methodology of the research is to apply the general scientific methods of theoretical and empirical levels: analysis and generalization of scientific and theoretical foundations of the study, logical method. These methods make it possible to characterize the historical prerequisites for the creation of a department of choreographic art at the Kyiv State Institute of Culture (KDIK) O.E. Korniychuk, to determine the role of the department in the development of higher choreographic education in our country. Scientific novelty of the research consists in the analysis of pedagogical and scientific activity of the teachers of the Department of Folk Choreography of the present KNUKiM, their innovations in the development of new disciplines and the formation of modern educational programs. Conclusions. There is an increase in popularity of folk choreographic art in the sixties of the twentieth century in Ukraine, which led to its state encouragement and, accordingly, the relevance of training the leaders of amateur dance groups. In response to the challenges of the 1970's at the O.E. Kornichuk KDIK (now KNUHM) opened the Choreography Department, which was the first in Ukraine to train specialists in folk choreographic art with higher education. The decisive role in its activity was played by the head of the department Kim Vasylenko, well-known specialists Galina Berezova and Andrey Gumenyuk. Today, the department is created by experienced and young professionals, and their activity isa unique model of training of specialists-choreographers of a wide profile.
