Summary/Abstract: On August 21st 1898, the monument dedicated to Johannes Honterus, situated adjacent to the evangelical parish church of Augustan Confession (the so-called Black Church), was solemnly unveiled. The execution of the monument had been assigned by the congregation’s presbytery to Harro Magnussen, a sculptor active in Berlin. The iconographical analyses of this and several earlier portraits of Johannes Honterus bring to light exemplarily the different projections of the historical person of the Transylvanian reformer and humanist in visual media emerging not only in the course of the 19th century, but also in the Early Modern Period.
