Summary/Abstract: What does recent architecture mean? Outside the profession, sometimes also within it, the term „recent” is associated to „new”. But conversions and even restorations arehybrid forms of recent architecture.A conversion, understood as changing the building’sfunction, is based on a reverse process than designing anew building: the starting point being the already existingframework – the building itself and its context, towardsthe new function. The negotiations between thecultural and utilisation values, between the specific limitations, risks and opportunities, between the genius lociand new meanings, lead towards different approachesregarding the architectural intervention. The paper aims to analyse different approaches used inthe processes of converting the valuable industrial builtenvironment (itself representing a “recent”, “new” segmentof the heritage domain), in terms of the architecturalapproach and discourse, the reference to the intrinsicvalues, based on east European case studies, from historicalcities.
