Going out of The Land of Urlo

Summary/Abstract: The subject of the article is a reflection on the search for the spiritual sources of humanity (the spiritual motherland of the human being) undergone by Czesław Miłosz in his book The Land of Ulro, combining the author’s personal confessions with a philosophical-literally essay. The context for the reflection is the phenomenon of the “Romantic turning point”, which consequent “disinheritance of the mind”, an experience manifesting the spiritual estrangement and expulsion of man. In his book Miłosz refers to those who have been his inspiration: Adam Mickiewicz, Emanuel Swedenborg, Oscar Miłosz and William Blake. It is the latter who provides the motif of the, The Land of Ulro designating “the land of imagination disinherited by science”. In his considerations Miłosz repeatedly evokes the image of the First Man, a key figure in the thoughts of the mentioned authors, who represent a hidden, esoteric current in European culture. This myth expresses the fundamental striving to rediscover the sources of humanity, its plenitude and true destiny, and thus – to overcome the diverse forms of alienation man is subject to.
