Summary/Abstract: In the past years, there has been a growing interest toward the utility of fully automated online applications and web-based programs, of which many are made for preventive purposes. The current study aims to evaluate the preliminary results of a pilot study that assessed the efficacy of Once Upon a High from a methodological point of view, as well as to formulate recommendations regarding the planning of similar prevention programs in the future. The application showed significant associations with reduced past month energy drink consumption frequencies, a trend like increase in the knowledge about psychoactive substances and the frequency of physical exercise, and a partial connection with reduced past month alcohol consumption frequencies. The most effective modules of the application were characterized by gaming elements, indicating that gamification might be a beneficial approach, increasing the efficacy of such interventions. The pilot efficacy study of the Once Upon a High app altogether resulted in positive outcomes as well as some negative experiences that need to be considered regarding the further developments of the application.
