Keywords: the celebration of religious and profane holidays

Summary/Abstract: The author reviews and analyses the holidays using approaches rooted in psychoanalyses and cognitive therapy. He provides a two-dimensional categorization of the subject. Along one axis holidays are divided into four groups such as family based, national, religious and international ones - according to the community celebrating them. The second axis deals with the developmental phase they represent (i.e. birth, stages, transitions, death). The author calls attention to an observed circulatority in the celebration of religious and profane holidays, to their mentalhygienic function and how they become objects of institutional reframing. Their relationship to psychiatric disorders (e.g. depression, addiction) are also discussed.
