Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to offer an introduction to a terminological problem: what is the meaning of the technical terms arsis and thesis in Greek rhythmical sources? Several interpretations of the terms are examined. Arguments are presented to show that these interpretations do not succeed at solving the terminological riddle. At the end, the traditional view that thesis denotes the perceptually marked duration is called into question. Conclusion: an answer to the question about the meaning of arsis and thesis should be sought beyond the theoretical texts in an empirical study of Greek musical and poetic documents.
