Summary/Abstract: The role of the police in the conduct of elections in Nigeria has received considerable attention in the literature. While the police have continued to be blamed for some infractions in the electoral process, little attention has been paid to the constitutional power of security agencies in the electoral cycle. This study examines the role of the police in the electoral process in Nigeria. Data were obtained from official publication, textbooks, journals and newspapers. It identifies the police as the lead internal security agency charged with the responsibility of enforcing laws and maintaining order for the proper functioning of the electoral process. Provisions in the Electoral Act(Amendment),2015, specifically, sections 29 (3), 94 (4) and (5) were however identified as assigning vital security decisions to the Independent National Electoral Commission thereby undermining the effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force in carrying out their responsibilities.
