Summary/Abstract: This article shows the influence of spatial planning on the spread of the city of Plock over adjacent communes. The problem of urban development, rural areas and the process of urbanization in suburban areas have been confronted with the functioning of the system of planning in Poland. The article is trying to answer the question whether the Polish system of spatial planning is a tool preventing or favoring urban sprawl. The authors deliver the answer in the light of the accumulated literature, as well as on the basis of planning documents, statistics and land cover data.
