Summary/Abstract: According to Brian Mossop, translator’s three voices are the result of stylistic choices. This voice schema reflects the translator’s relationship to others in the reported speech situation. We suggest refining this triadic approach by integrating the concepts of relevance and diversity. In our view, the cognitive principle and the communicative principle of relevance account for how the translator makes a decision about the most suited voice for a given communication context, including dealing with diversity within the source language/text, target language/text or the translator’s own idiom.
