Summary/Abstract: Purpose of the article. The goal of this research is to identify the specifics of professional thought of graphic designers, to demonstrate meaningful differentiation of the tasks that should be established and solved during the time of preparation. Methodology. The author uses the research methodology that consists of using the theoretical methods and system-structural analysis that allow to see and fill knowledge gaps regarding the professional abilities of graphic design specialists. Scientific novelty of the work is to expand the perceptions about the level of divergent thinking of graphic designers, their ability to identify and comprehensively process structural relationships between all elements of the visual code in the information messages of the different level of complexity. It is suggested to consider the professional abilities of specialists in graphic design as a personification of polylinguistic visual coding of information that is clearly perceived and unambiguously decoded by consumers. Conclusions. Perception of the requirements for the professional thinking of graphic designers provides the reason to consider modern graphic design as an integrative activity that is focused on quality assurance in the visual encoding of information using four fundamentally different coding systems: imaging, typographic, sign and technical. Hence, a specialist in graphic design must be able to conduct a holistic structuring of objects of the material world; be able to provide justification for the efficiency of the means of encoding of communicative appeals, and to ensure the quality and graphic culture of their implementation.
