Summary/Abstract: Cultural identity in the Theatre can take two forms, cultural affinity and tribalism. Its milder form of cultural affinity is generally thoughtful and tolerant, whereas the baser form of cultural identity is latent tribalism, intolerant and reactionary, that can result in a de facto but very real form of censorship in theatre productions. Although I find the work of scholars to be useful on occasion, I should perhaps begin this paper by saying that I do not consider myself a conventional scholar, even though I have done all of the required course work for a doctorate in Theatre. Instead I consider myself a theatre practitioner rather than a theorist.
