Summary/Abstract: In recent earthquakes, there has been a significant field evidence that the collapse of existing structures is due to the effect of the vertical component of the seismic ground motions. Such field evidence has been not supported by comprehensive analytical and experimental testing yet. This study focuses on the preliminary analysis of the seismic response of reinforced concrete elements exposed to horizontal and vertical ground motions. In this research, the vertical earthquake effect was investigated on two reinforced concrete buildings with 3 stories and 7 stories
