Summary/Abstract: This article attempts to highlight different aspects of the relationship between the Romanian inhabitants of free villages and dependent villages with the monks of Wallachian and Moldovan monasteries dedicated to foreign Orthodox communities by the analyse of several test cases found in the princely chancelleries. During the 16th century, the increase in number of the properties of the Romanian monasteries, whose a large part belonged to the most important Orthodox communities in the Ottoman Empire, brought a new stage in the enslavement of the villages. This situation created conflicts and disputes; the villagers refusing to obey to their master or acting detrimental to the monastic properties.
