Summary/Abstract: In George Sand’s fiction the garden occupies a prominent place. It is not just a (sometimes lavishly described) background, a simple location for the plot to unravel. Be it an orchard or a vegetables garden, a merely decorative space or an organised spot comprising very useful medicinal herbs, be it small or large, privateor public, frequented by plebeians or aristocrats, the garden never ceases to seduce Sand’s reader. It becomes a literary motif that the author skilfully exploits in her writings, either as a real or a fantastic frame. Sometimes it connects the two different referential spheres, which is far from being gratuitous. The passage from reality to dream, from the world of the senses to the imaginary world, often mediated by daydreaming or by the eruption of an uncanny element, serves to inculcate in the reader the true values of life.
