Summary/Abstract: Although Paio Gomes Charinho was one of the most prominent troubadours in the Galician-Portuguese context, the attention paid to his important work has never been complemented with studies on the existing questions about his family background and other biographical aspects. In the present essay, we make use of some lesser known data. And while remaining aware that much research still needs to be done, we seek to reflect not only on Paio Gomes Charinho’s lineage, but also on the more obscure period of his biography, i.e., before the first archival document we know of – a donation from D. Sancho IV of Castile, by which time Paio Gomes Charinho already emerges as an admiral. We believe that the position he held and the relevance of the sea in his writings plainly justify his inclusion in a work devoted to the important event now being celebrated.
