Summary/Abstract: The article gives a critical overview of how Linda Hutcheon described the genre she herself called historiographic metafiction as fundamental for the poetics of postmodernism. It then offers directions for further studies in the field of historiographic metafiction. Firstly, the genre can be analyzed from the point of view of narrative semantics and the theory of fictional worlds. Secondly, the genre’s development after Hutcheon’s publication can be traced. Thirdly, the genre can be discussed in comparison with that of the traditional historical novel, which has gone on to coexist with it. Fourthly, a Bulgarian contextualization of that genre would be especially interesting: why there is seemingly no historiographic metafiction in Bulgaria and is that really the case?
