Summary/Abstract: The paper analyzes different modes of historical experience and their relevance for the formation of historical identity. Pursuing a general approach, it treats the relationship between time experience and historical consciousness as a venue and procedure of gaining cultural orientation for human activity and identity. It further explicates three different modes of time experiences to be worked through by our historical consciousness: The normal, critical and catastrophic mode of time experience. In respect to the catastrophic experience the paper discusses the issue of trauma in historical thinking. Special attention is given to certain types of historical events by which historical identity is shaped fundamentally. Finally, the various attempts in the field of historical thinking at making historical sense of traumatic experiences and events are discussed. Any narration and interpretation of traumas is, by simple logical reasons, a process of de-traumatization. Taking the argumentation a step further the paper distinguishes different modes of detraumatization typologically. These different types will be discussed with regard to the problem of how to retain the traumatic character of historical events when being narrated and interpreted. The argument of this paper is brought to rest in some typological considerations about the issue of a ‘secondary traumatization’.
