Summary/Abstract: While various testimonies on the life of the Jews in Arab countries seem contradictory, Georges Bensoussan considers them complementary, since collective memory is not homogeneous: the relationships of the Jewish communities with their neighbours have been based on conviviality and hostility, too. But how can one explain why these people have been participating for decades in spreading the myth of a peaceful life, when the reality has been much more nuanced? From this perspective, we will focus on the literary work of Albert Memmi who, through his essays as well as his fiction, is driven by the desire to give a fairer view on the life of the Judeo-Mediterranean and Judeo-Oriental communities during the century before decolonization. The work of Albert Memmi will be a support in our reflection and will be intersected by the varied experiences of other writers, such as Naim Kattan, Marlene Amar, Paule Darmon or Daniel Sibony.
