Summary/Abstract: This article examines the question whether there can be a programme for democracy. When thinking of democracy, we remember famous concepts of liberty, equality and fraternity. Jacques Derrida also draws on these concepts in his analysis of democracy. He sees the figure of the brother as a key figure for the understanding of democracy, because he finds that every concept of democracy presupposes a possibility of fraternisation between people. Fraternity is a way to enhance the social bond and ensure the motivation to act democratically. But it is also a problematic figure as it renders everybody into a comparable and countable individual and the uniqueness and particularity of a singular being can be lost. It is also problematic because it situates politics in the context of the family and the andocentric structure.
