Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the Russian Empire’s settler colonialism in the North-West Caucasus in the 1860s. These lands, home to Adyghe (Circassian)peoples before their mass expulsion in 1864, became an area of a statedrivenCossack colonization that was supposed to consolidate the empire’sgrip on its new territorial acquisition. The paper shows how economichardships of the settlers led to a disillusionment with the Russians’capacities to act as agents of colonization.
