Summary/Abstract: The theme of professionalization and professions is up-to-date and significant not only for researchers and educators who are engaged in the preparation of future professionals but for whole society. The quality of the public services depends on the quality of the professionals. The aim of the article is to point out the changes in the concept of professionalism in social work in a short historical excursion and to outline trends and challenges for the field.
