Summary/Abstract: Part of the research on the relationship between man and environment, micro toponyms have long been in the attention of historians. The purpose of the present paper is to analyse the names of waters form Transylvania in the historical context of the 13th-15th centuries. Hydronyms, as part of micro toponyms, can show how the language has changed, as they are considered stable geographical elements, as well as put into context the human perspective on the environment in the researched epoch. For Transylvania the influence of Latin and the current use of Hungarian have been decisive when it comes to the terms used for floating and stagnant waters for the charters issued in the Middle Ages. In some cases, water names could be used to identify current water names. In other cases, a differentiation into the medieval terminology can be slightly noted. Moreover, parts of the water names are related to environmental characteristics of the region. All these show that the subject of micro toponyms for Transylvania is very offering and can be a starting point for various historical researches.
