Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to present a research regarding the relationship between perceived maternal and paternal acceptance-rejection and adult psychological adjustment in middle adulthood. The sample consists of 284 subjects between 40 and 60 years of age (M = 47.26, SD = 3.71). The sample is not gender balanced (260 women (91.5%) and 24 men (8.5%). Most of the subjects are Bulgarians (275; 96.8%), university graduates (230; 81%), employed (221; 77.8%). Most of the participants are married or cohabitating with a partner (216; 76%). The methods of research are Parental Acceptance-Rejection Questionnaire/Control, Adult (Mother and Father Version), Personality Assessment Questionnaire, Adult, and Personal Information Form. The results show that both the perceived maternal and paternal acceptance-rejection are associated with the psychological adjustment of individuals in middle adulthood. However, these interrelationships are very different depending on the age of the participants. For 40-year-olds, both perceived maternal and paternal relationships are interrelated with subjects’ psychological adjustment. For 50-year-olds, significant is only the association with the mother acceptance-rejection but not with the father’s. Significant predictors for 40-year-olds’ psychological adjustment is the perceived relationship with both the mother and the father, while for 50-year-olds significant influence has only the perceived relationship with the mother. These results are interpreted within the framework of the Interpersonal Acceptance-Rejection Theory. They raise a number of questions about the role of parents and the influence of the perceived relationship with both of them with regards to psychological adjustment and personality dispositions of people in middle adulthood.
