Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the main methods used by V.G. Korolenko in journalistic investigations, gives examples of the use and interpretation of statistical and other documentary data, as well as other techniques and methods of investigation characteristic for the writer. The correlation between the methods of interviewing eyewitnesses and analyzing various documents in investigations by V.G. Korolenko, the reasons for choosing one method or another in the context of various investigations have been revealed. The investigative activity of V.G. Korolenko has been considered in the context of the general processes characterizing the development of Russian journalism in the second half of the 19th – early 20th century. Little-known examples from the journalistic investigative work of the famous publicist have been provided. In addition, an overview of the opinions of modern literary and journalistic researchers about V.G. Korolenko as an investigative journalist has been given. The relationship between literary and journalistic investigations has been described. Special attention has been paid to the available scientific literature on this issue. V.G. Korolenko’s achievements can be reclaimed and studied as a forerunner of modern data journalism, investigative journalism, and journalism of social problems, which are the areas of activity of journalists at in the early 21st century.
