Summary/Abstract: Ukrainian poet Evhen Sverstiuk (1927-2014) entered Ukrainian literature and culture as an artist, who defended Ukrainian national identity, the right for the uniqueness, in the conditions of the Russian ideological, political and linguistic pressure of the Soviet empire in the second half of the 20th century. E. Sverstyuk openly opposed the discrimination of the Ukrainian people. The scientific problem is to understand and transfer his work from a narrow political stratum into a broad artistic context in which the concept of "freedom" acquires existential transcendental essence. The category of the lyrical hero was revealed in allusions, the tradition was traced. The lyrical hero is metaphorical, referring to the world discourse of eternal love. The idea of "love at a distance" represents evaluative attitude of poets to reality, their conception of world and people.
