Summary/Abstract: Virtual teams attract a rising research interest due to the operating beyond the restrictions of location, time zone differences, organizational limitations and hierarchy. In a virtual communication setting, physical contact between the team members is limited, while the internal communication and the execution of strategic goals depend on computer-mediated communication. In direct communication, nonverbal cues carry an array of functions, which are limited in a virtual setting. This presents a unique set of challenges, which warrant a more in-depth analysis and identification. The focus of this paper is to review the characteristics and challenges faced by the leadership role with the exchange of information, nonverbal communication management and effective communication overall. The text reviews the Media Richness Theory, as well as the nonverbal expressions of power in virtual teams. The offered and systematic aspects of nonverbal communication in virtual teams would be helpful to managers of dispersed and/or mixed teams, especially to managers without prior experience with these aspects of leadership. The text would also be beneficial as a theoretical foundation to the knowledge of more experienced managers.
