Summary/Abstract: The aim of the current study is to examine the age differences in the ability of empathy in children in primary school age. A total of 247 children, divided into two groups - first graders (6 – 8 years) and fourth graders (9 - 11) respectively, were tested with a test adapted to the Bulgarian conditions for measuring empathy in primary school age (Stoyanova 2011). The results obtained did not reveal statistically significant differences in the average of the test and its scales between the first grade and the fourth grade group, but found significant differences in the percentage performance in the groups of children with low, medium and high empathy. Given the reported results, underlying assumptions related to age conditioning the dynamics in the phenomenon from the beginning to the end of the same age period is not supported.
