Summary/Abstract: The author provides a contrastive analysis of ethical emotional concepts meaning ‘annoyance’, ‘offence’, ‘envy’ and ‘jealousy’ in three Slavonic languages. All these concepts have three general features: 1) the semantic component ‘pity’; 2) a development of these emotions to a form of aggression; 3) a stereoscopic view of the situation that led to the emergence of the emotion. The analysis facilitates an investigation of the specifics of national identity and of certain dominant features of Russian, Polish and Czech mentality. The author concludes that Russian speakers experience many emotions as collective, whereas Polish and Czech speakers as personal. For example, the Russian word обида ‘offence’ is not only an internal emotion, but also an angry appeal to those who caused the offence. The Polish and Czech languages contain many lexemes with the meaning of ‘offence’: the linguistic cultures emphasize different aspects of offence experienced by their respective speakers.
