Summary/Abstract: The author investigates the functioning of the US–THEM opposition in the Bulgarian worldview on the basis of a questionnaire administered to students in Sofia, Plovdiv and Blagoevgrad. Three questions were asked: Who do you consider as belonging to “us”? Who belongs to “them”? Who are you?The study was conducted in order to discover the everyday understanding of each category, with the influence of the opposition on the students’ self-identity. A comparison is also made between questionnaires conducted with Polish and Bulgarian respondents. The results reveal a range of criteria to which speakers relate when they specify the meanings of “us” and “them”. Five major criteria can be identified: social, family-related, psychological, national and spatial, the crucial ones being the psychological and social criteria.
