Global Implications of US America First Policy for Cooperation Between Germany and Russia in the Second Decade of the 21st Century

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the global implications of selected aspects of Donald Trump’s administration „America First” policy and their significance for the relations between Germany and Russia. It focuses on three substantive problems: The essence of the “America First” strategy of the US President Donald Trump administration; Main tendencies and challenges of the evolution of Germany’s policy towards Russia; Global implications of “America First” policy for Germany’s cooperation with Russia. The following implications of the D. Trump’s administration „America First” policy have the most considerable significance for cooperation between Germany and Russia, since 2017: the dimension, scope and future of Germany’s cooperation with Russia in the context of the Ukrainian crisis; controversies over supplies of Russian natural gas to Germany; the challenges of trade with Russia in the context of its return to cooperation with China; Germany’s position on NATO funding and measures for international security and disarmament. The above-mentioned implications cause a series of tensions and mutual controversies between the US and Germany in the political and legal, economic and military areas as well as in the field of social attitudes and behaviors, although they do not ultimately determine the future of German-American relations in a global context.
